Spin down sediment filters work together with whole house water filtration systems, carbon filters, undersink water filtration systems, and RO systems.

Spin down sediment filter is designed to capture particulate, chunks, dirt, debris, and sand from water.

The filter helps protect appliances such as water heaters, water pipes, water filters, dishwashers, washing machines, and bathing facilities from particulate blockage.

How does spin down sediment filter work?

The spin-down sediment filter includes a head and housing. The head is connected in line with your plumbing. The water goes through one side of the head, then goes through the filter inside the housing, where particulates are removed. Once particulates are removed, they accumulate at the bottom of the housing.

Once a week, you open the valve at the bottom of the housing, put the bucket underneath, and flush the dirt accumulated at the bottom.

Flushing out accumulated sediment varies depending on water usage and the amount of sediment. You can perform it daily, weekly, or more.

How do I choose a spin down sediment filter?

What to check when buying a spin-down and sediment trapper

  1. Particulates in your water

If your water has a lot of particulate or debris, you need a sediment trapper because it has a large capacity at the bottom of the housing to hold the sediment, so you don’t have to open the valve frequently to allow collected debris to exit.

If there is less particulate, you need a spin down sediment filter.

2. Type of connection

The connection is based on the size of the head/cap and the pipe size you have in your house. Common pipe sizes are 3/4 inches, 1 inch, 1 1/2 (1.5) inches, and 2 inches.

The filter comes with a head that is connected directly to your water line. The head has a connection the same size as the pipe.

There are different types of connections

  • ¾ inches-has thread
  • 1 inch
  • 11/2 inch
  • 2 inch

If you have a pipe size of 3/4 inch, buy the spin-down filter that has a 3/4 inch head. The same case is for other sizes.

3. Installation style

There is some connection head that has a thread that others do not have.
For the one without thread, you will require glue.

4. Screen Mesh

Mesh relates to microns. The ability of the filter to remove particulates of a certain size. These are the number of holes the mesh or filter has.

The size of the mesh is determined by what type of particulate you want to remove from the water.

The higher the mesh number, the finer the mesh, and the system will remove even fine particulates.

The lower the mesh number the more large mesh and the system will remove only large particulates.

The mesh is like a filter. So if you clog the screen frequently, now that you don’t have the right mesh size.

Mesh is made from stainless steel or polypropylene.

Rusco spin-down and sediment trapper

What is a Rusco Spin-Down Filter and How Does It Work?

Rusco offers spin-down and sediment trapper filters. It is available in different micron sizes and connectors.

Rusco spin-down vs sediment trapper: what is the difference

The sediment trapper has a large reservoir or space at the bottom to hold the sediment, making it ideal for homes with heavy sediment in the water supply. Spin down does not have a large space at the bottom of the screen to hold the sediment, making it ideal for homes with less sediment in the water supply.

How do you install a spin-down and sediment trapper?

As said earlier, the filter has a head/cap and housing. The head goes in line with your plumbing and the housing is connected to the head.

The housing is where the filter is stored, and after filtering dirty water, the sediment settles at the bottom, waiting for you to open the valve at the bottom of the housing to let it out.

Where to install a spin down sediment filter

If you are installing in a well-system you are supposed to install after the pressure tank and first thing before the other water filtration system.

When installing it on tap water, city water, or municipal water, you are supposed to install it right after the meter to remove sediment, rust, sand, and other impurities from tap and well water.

How do you clean a spin down sediment filter?

Just like any water treatment system, you need to provide maintenance from time to time.

When the mesh starts to clog, flushing is not enough. You need to remove the cartridge and clean it.

To clean it, remove the housing and take the mesh off.

Use a brush to scrub it off and return everything together

The benefit of the spin-down filter

  • Filter changes are not required. You clean it and reuse it.

Cons of spin-down filter

  • Opening valve frequently to let the accumulated debris out of the housing.

What is different between sediment trapper and spin down?

The concept of the head and the housing are the same. The sediment trapper has more capacity for accumulating particulate while spin-down has a small capacity for holding sediment.
A sediment trapper is used when you have a lot of debris. The bottom of the housing is large enough that it will hold a large capacity of debris, so you don’t have to open the valve frequently to allow collected debris to exit.
