How does a water ionizer machine work?
Water has two ions: dissolved carbon dioxide ions called bicarbonate and mineral ions.
Mineral ions are calcium and magnesium which are positively charged and dissolved carbon dioxide ions are negatively charged.
The alkaline water machine has two compartments: the anode and the cathode side. Both sides are separated using a semi-permeable ion exchange membrane.
The water that is siphoned near the cathode side increases the hydroxide levels, making it have high PH levels, or alkaline water, while the water siphoned near the anode side increases the level of hydrogen, making it acidic.
The PH levels of the anode side are 4-6 and the cathode side is 8-12.

Where to install
A most alkaline water ionizer is installed directly on the faucet in the kitchen, bathroom or utility room and placed on the countertop close to your kitchen sink so that the excess water would drain in it.
Other models are connected directly to the cold water line under the sink/under the countertop.
How do I choose an alkaline water machine?
- Plates material
Water ionizers should have platinum-coated titanium plates that do not accept other ionizers that have other metals like gold or alloy coated.
Titanium can resist erosion, and platinum has the efficiency of ionizing water.
A low voltage current is passed to the plate. When water molecules come to contact with charged plates it separates water into positively charged and negatively charged.
- Number of plates
Another thing to check on plates is the number. The more the number of plates the more effective your ionizer will be.
Normally ionizer with more than 5 plates is better.
The unit with fewer than five plates is cheap but will provide poor water quality, limited functions, and a low flow rate.
The machine with more than five plates is expensive but will provide high-quality water, more functionality, and a high flow rate.
- Cleaning of plates
There are water ionizers that are designed to automatically self-clean after every use or after some time.
Other customers are required to program the unit to clean itself according to water source and usage.
The best ionizer is the one automatically self-cleans without involving the user to program it.
- PH and ORP levels
The main aim of ionizers is to increase the water PH level, provide alkaline water and water with reduced ORP.
Your machine should be able to provide all these different types of water.
- Warranty
The alkaline water machine is an expensive device so you need to buy from reputable companies and has a warranty.
Some brands have a lifetime warranty, others two to five years.
