There are three methods of measuring water PH levels. This includes:

Of the above three methods, the only one that gives you an accurate result that is easy to understand is using a digital meter.

In this article, we are going to discuss the best digital PH meter for water.

What is a Digital PH Meter?

A digital PH meter is a device that measures the acidity or alkalinity of water. It is an electronic device that has a probe and displays the pH level on a digital display.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A pH level of 7 is considered neutral, while anything below 7 is acidic and anything above 7 is alkaline. The unit of measurement for the pH scale is called a “pH unit.” A lower number indicates greater acidity and a higher number indicates greater alkalinity.

How to use PH meters

  • Remove the protective cap.
  • Put the PH meter electrode in the water.
  • Press the button to be measured.
  • Stir the water gently.
  • The stabilized result will be displayed on the LCD screen in seconds.

How should it be stored when not in use? Dry or in a solution?

  • Rinse the PH meter after every use with distilled water.
  • Dry it off using filter paper, a paper towel, or a clean, soft cloth.
  • Replace the protective cap to keep the electrode from drying out.
  • Store in case it comes with it.
  • You do not need to store it in a solution.

How do you know it’s time to replace the battery?

The PH meter requires the battery to operate. When the meter cannot be turned on or the LCD/screen fades, it is time to replace the battery.

How to calibrate the digital PH meter

  • Prepare 3 containers to add buffer solutions (pH 4.00 solution, pH 6.86 solution, and pH 9.18 solution).
  • Dissolve each calibration buffer solution in 250 ml of distilled water.
  • Turn on the pH meter.
  • Immerse the electrode in the pH 6.86 solution (at a temperature of 25 °C)
  • Press the “CAL” (calibration) button for 5 seconds and release.
  • The display screen will start flashing “6.86”
  • Wait for it until the display screen stops flashing.
  • Rinse the electrode with distilled water and make it dry with filter paper.
  • Repeat the above steps with 4.01 pH buffer powder and 9.18 pH buffer powder.
  • The digital device is ready for use.

Bonus video DIGITAL PH METER CALIBRATION

How to measure the PH value using a PH meter

  • Remove the protective cap from the pH meter.
  • Put the electrode into distilled water.
  • Slowly stir it for 5-10 seconds, then take out the pH meter and dry it.
  • Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the unit.
  • Dip the electrode in the water you want to test, making sure the whole electrode is submerged.
  • Stir gently and wait for the value to stabilize.
  • The LCD screen will display both the temperature and the PH.

How often should you calibrate the PH meter?

For the first user, if your meter has been calibrated by the manufacturer in advance, you do not need to calibrate it, but if not, you need to calibrate it before use. Use the steps above.

Calibrate once per week if you often test solutions of PH 10, or once per half month for neutral solutions.

Note

  • Rinse the electrode with pure water before the next test.
  • Rinse and rest for 3-5 min before conversing from strong acid to strong alkaline and vice versa.
  • Don’t exceed the immersion line when testing.
  • Please Ensure There Is No Water In The PH & TDS Meters After Use, Otherwise They Will Rust. Use filter paper or a clean soft cloth to gently wipe it before capping.

How to Choose a Digital PH Meter

Before buying a PH meter, you should consider the following factors:

  • Accuracy – Accurate measurements are important for this
  • Easy to use
  • Battery life
  • Added features: Some come with an alarm system that alerts you when the water is at a certain level of acidity or alkalinity.
