Hard water is water with a high content of mineral. When the hard water gets in contact with home appliances, it leaves spots known as hard water build-up/stain. The stains are problematic to clean, and that’s the reason why we have prepared an article on how to remove hard water stains in no time.
The hard water build-up happens when the water dries, leaving behind deposits that cause a spot on the bathroom floor, faucet, sink, and others.
How to clean hard water build-up
Step 1: use a white vinegar solution
White Vinegar is acid and the best solution to remove hard water stains on most surfaces. Make sure you use White Vinegar the other types of Vinegar like apple cider won’t clean.
One advantage with white Vinegar is non-toxic
Mix 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water.
Put it in the spray bottle and spray the mixture on the spotty surfaces.
Use a clean towel to wipe the surface
You can put the mixture in the bucket/bowl and soak the towel use it to clean the surface.
Rinse the surface with clean water
To remove stubborn hard water stains using the vinegar is easy.
Let the mixture or vinegar alone sit for a few minutes like 5-20 minutes instead of scrubbing or wiping immediately.
You can also let the mixture sit for overnight.
The mixture works on the sink, floor tiles, and glass shower door but not wooden surfaces.
Step 2 paste of vinegar and baking soda

Add two tablespoon of baking soda and add water slowly until it forms a paste.
Use that paste to remove hard water stains on affected surfaces.
Let it settle for a minute before wiping or scrubbing.
Step 3 lemon juice
Lemon is another acid that can help remove hard water stains.
It works well when mixed with vinegar
Spray lemon juice on the spotty surfaces like a faucet.
Let it settle or sit for 10 minutes and rinse
Wipe the area clean.
How to remove hard water stains from the car window
Make sure the car window is clean and dry.
Mix 50/50 solution of distilled water (not tap water) and vinegar
Spray the solution on the car window.
Let it settle/sit for 10 minutes and rinse.
How to remove hard water stains from the glass window
Make sure the glass window is clean (free from dust)
You can spray a mixture of vinegar and water (step 1 above)
You can also use a paste of baking soda and vinegar (step 2 above)
Let it sit or settle for a few minutes and rinse.

You can use the mixture of white and vinegar we have prepared on step 1
Put the mixture in the bowl and soak the towel
Use that towel to wipe the door.
Rinse using a clean, dry towel and make sure the cloth is dry otherwise will leave a spot on the surface
Another way to remove stain from the glass shower door is by using the mixture of vinegar and Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser.
Most people complain use of white vinegar, lemon juice, and a mixture of baking soda didn’t work. So I would advise they use Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser.
First, clean the glass shower door with a mixture of vinegar and water (the above step)
If it didn’t remove the stain prepare Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser paste.
Add ¼ cup of Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser in a basin and add water slowly until it forms a paste.
Put on the gloves in your hand.
Use the hand to smear the paste on the spotty surface of the glass shower door.
Use Super Fine Grade #0000 Steel Wool. Do not use any steel wool; the fine steel may scratch the glass.
If the first application and scrubbing didn’t work, repeat the step until the stain clears.
How to remove hard water stains on faucets and showerhead
The faucets and shower head hard water stains can be removed using vinegar mixture. The one prepared in step 1 above.
Remove showerheads and faucet aerators and soak them in the white vinegar mixture.
Use a brush to help remove stubborn stains.
How to remove hard water stains from drinking glasses and dishes
Fill the basin with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water. Soak the glass for about an hour.
Rinse them thoroughly
Run the dishwasher for spotless dishes and glasses.
How to remove hard water stains from the toilet
Pour 11/2 cup of white vinegar in the toilet bowl and let it sit for a few minutes.
Use a toilet brush to scrub the stain until entirely gone
Flush the toilet to get rid of vinegar.
Another way you can remove hard water stains from the toilet is by using Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser.
Pour the Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser inside the toilet bowl and use the toilet brush to scrub until the stain come out.
Flush the toilet and you are done.
How to clean toilet hard water stain using baking soda and vinegar
Pour 1-cup of vinegar in the toilet bowl, making sure all areas are covered. Let it sit for about 1-minute.
Add 1 cup of baking soda and 1to 2 cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes.
Make sure the mixture is well spread in the toilet bowl. You can use the toilet brush to swish the mixture around the toilet bowl.
After 30 minutes scrub the toilet bowl using toilet brush until the stain is gone.
Then flush the toilet to rinse.
Make sure the stain is gone before flushing.
How to clean hard water stains from the toilet using a mixture of borax and vinegar.
Borax is a Multi-Purpose Household Cleaner that can be used to remove hard water stains in the toilet.
Pour ¼ cup of borax in the toilet bowl spread it around the toilet using a toilet brush.
Add 1 cup of vinegar.
Allow mixture of vinegar and borax sit for 30 minutes.
Scrub the toilet bowl using a toilet brush.
Flush the toilet to rinse.
How to remove hard water stains from porcelain sink
Close the sink drain and fill with hot water
Add 2 cups of vinegar and let it sit for a few hours
After a few hours drain the mixture of vinegar and water.
The hard water stains will go to drain and wipe the sink with a sponge or soft cloth.
You can also use the paste of vinegar and baking soda
Mix vinegar and baking soda ratio 2baking soda: 1vinegar until it forms a paste.
Smear the paste on the porcelain sink
Let it sit for a few minutes.
Scrub the surface gently using a moistened sponge or soft cloth.
How to remove hard water stains from stainless steel
There are utensils, sink, dishwasher and faucet made of stainless steel.
You can use white vinegar.
Put the vinegar in the spray bottle.
Spray around the stained area let it sit for a few minutes
Scrub with soft cloth or sponge to remove hard spots
Rinse with clean water.

How to remove hard water stains from stainless steel dishwasher and refrigerator
You can use a stainless cleaner like Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser 12-Ounces (1-Pack) or make you at home using baking soda, olive oil, vinegar, and lemon juice.
Mix ½ cup baking soda, ¼ cup vinegar, a tablespoon of lemon juice and olive oil.
Stir until they form a paste.
Dip the soft cloth in the paste
Smear on the stained surface with the grain of the stainless steel.
How to remove hard water stains from tiles
Dump the soft cloth with white vinegar
Wipe the stained tiles with a wet cloth and let the vinegar sit for a few minutes.
Then rinse with a clean cloth.
You can make a paste of vinegar and baking soda.
Smear the paste on the tiles
Let it sit for a few hours.
If the paste is dry remove with water and dry with a clean cloth.

How to remove hard water stains from plastic
What you need to remove hard water stains from plastic is using a mixture of vinegar and water. Ration 1 vinegar: 1 water
Put the mixture in the spray bottle and spray the stained surface.
Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
For stubborn stain allow the mixture to stay overnight or a few hours. You can also use undiluted vinegar for better results.
Use soft cloth or brush to wipe away the remaining stain.
Use a slice of lemon
Rub the lemon over the affected area
Scrub or wipe using cloth
Rinse the area clean.
Plastic food container soak them overnight in the vinegar solution (50/50 water and vinegar)
How to remove hard water stains from tub surround
The methods below are applicable on both plastic and fiberglass bathtub
Method 1 use of white distilled vinegar solution
You can dilute the vinegar using water 50/50 mixture or use undiluted white vinegar
Apply on the affected area let it sit for up to 30 minutes.
Rinse off with clean water.
Method 2 use of baking soda paste
Combine baking soda with water or vinegar to form a paste.
Apply the paste on the affected area
Let it sit for 10-15 minutes
Wipe off with a soft sponge or nylon brush
How do you prevent scum from building up
You can add water softener liquid or powder to your dishwasher when cleaning dishes or washing machine when washing clothes.
Install a water softener system to treat your hard water to soft water.
Tips when removing hard water stains
Do not let the hard water cleaning solution dry on the surface. Make sure you rinse and if possible dry out.
When cleaning the glass or toilet do not use harsh scrubbing brush or pads.
Some of the cleaner or mixture might be harsh on some surfaces. Before using detergent, I chose a small area to do a spot test.
