The hard water build-up happens when the water dries, leaving behind deposits that cause a spot on the bathroom floor, faucet, sink, and others.

How to clean hard water build-up

Step 1: use a white vinegar solution

White vinegar is acidic and the best solution to remove hard water stains from most surfaces. Make sure you use White Vinegar the other types of Vinegar like apple cider won’t clean.

White vinegar has the advantage of being non-toxic.

Mix a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water.

Put it in the spray bottle and spray the mixture on the spotty surfaces.

Use a clean towel to wipe the surface.

You can put the mixture in the bucket/bowl and soak the towel use it to clean the surface.

Rinse the surface with clean water.

It is simple to remove hard water stains with vinegar.

Let the mixture or vinegar alone sit for a few minutes like 5-20 minutes instead of scrubbing or wiping immediately.

You can also let the mixture sit overnight.

The mixture works on the sink, floor tiles, and glass shower door, but not on wooden surfaces.

Add two tablespoons of baking soda and add water slowly until it forms a paste.

Use that paste to remove hard water stains on affected surfaces.

Let it settle for a minute before wiping or scrubbing.

Lemon is another acid that can help remove hard water stains.

It works well when mixed with vinegar.

Spray lemon juice on spotty surfaces like a faucet.

Let it settle or sit for 10 minutes and rinse.

Mix a 50/50 solution of distilled water (not tap water) and vinegar.

Most people complain use of white vinegar, lemon juice, and a mixture of baking soda didn’t work. So I would advise they use Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser.

First, clean the glass shower door with a mixture of vinegar and water (the above step)

If it didn’t remove the stain, make a powdered cleaner paste with Bar Keepers’ Friend.

Add ¼ cup of Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser in a basin and add water slowly until it forms a paste.

Put on the gloves in your hand.

Use your hand to smear the paste on the spotty surface of the glass shower door.

Use Super Fine Grade #0000 Steel Wool. Do not use any steel wool; the fine steel may scratch the glass.

If the first application and scrubbing didn’t work, repeat the step until the stain clears.

How to remove hard water stains on faucets and showerheads

Hard water stains on faucets and shower heads can be removed with a vinegar mixture. The one prepared in step 1 above.

Remove showerheads and faucet aerators and soak them in the white vinegar mixture.

Use a brush to help remove stubborn stains.

Fill the basin with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water. Soak the glass for about an hour.

Rinse them thoroughly.

Another way is adding a rinsing agent to your dishwasher and then adding your usual dishwashing detergent.

Pour 11/2 cup of white vinegar into the toilet bowl and let it sit for a few minutes.

Pour the Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser inside the toilet bowl and use the toilet brush to scrub until the stain come out.

Flush the toilet and you are done.

How to clean toilet hard water stains using baking soda and vinegar

Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl, making sure all areas are covered. Let it sit for about a 1-minute.

Add 1 cup of baking soda and 1 to 2 cups of vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes.

Make sure the mixture is well spread in the toilet bowl. You can use the toilet brush to swish the mixture around the toilet bowl.

After 30 minutes scrub the toilet bowl using a toilet brush until the stain is gone.

Then flush the toilet to rinse.

Make sure the stain is gone before flushing.

How to clean hard water stains from the toilet using a mixture of borax and vinegar.

Borax is a Multi-Purpose Household Cleaner that can be used to remove hard water stains in the toilet.

Pour ¼ cup of borax into the toilet bowl and spread it around the toilet using a toilet brush.

Add 1 cup of vinegar.

Allow the mixture of vinegar and borax to sit for 30 minutes.

Scrub the toilet bowl using a toilet brush.

Close the sink drain and fill it with hot water

Add 2 cups of vinegar and let it sit for a few hours.

After a few hours drain the mixture of vinegar and water.

The hard water stains will go to the drain and wipe the sink with a sponge or soft cloth.

Mix 2 teaspoons baking soda and 1 tablespoon vinegar until paste forms.

Smear the paste on the porcelain sink.

Method 1

What you need to remove hard water stains from plastic is using a mixture of vinegar and water. Ration 1 vinegar: 1 water

Put the mixture in the spray bottle and spray the stained surface.

Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.

For stubborn stains, allow the mixture to sit overnight or for a few hours. You can also use undiluted vinegar for better results.

Use a soft cloth or brush to wipe away the remaining stain.

Tips when removing hard water stains

Do not let the hard water cleaning solution dry on the surface. Make sure you rinse and if possible dry out.

When cleaning the glass or toilet do not use a harsh scrubbing brush or pads.

Some of the cleaner or mixture might be harsh on some surfaces. Before using detergent, I chose a small area to do a spot test.
