I hope everyone agrees with me that the water we get from our tap is not healthy or safe to drink. That’s why every home needs to install a water filter to remove contaminants found in water. The reverse osmosis system is the most effective method to filter contaminants. In this article, we will discuss the best under sink reverse osmosis system.
Under sink reverse osmosis water filter comparison
An under-sink reverse osmosis system is installed under your kitchen sink and provides purified water at a single faucet on the sink top.
An under-sink water filter is a point-of-use filter, meaning it will filter water only at the location it is installed.
If you need purified water all over the house, you need a whole house reverse osmosis system.
What is under the sink reverse osmosis system?
A reverse osmosis system is a water filtration system that treats water using a reverse osmosis membrane.
The membrane only allows pure water molecules to pass through the tiny membrane, and water with contaminants is left behind and flushed out of the drain.
How does the under sink reverse osmosis system work?
Under-sink reverse osmosis systems treat water using various stages. The stages contain the following filters
- sediment filter
- Carbon filter
- The reverse osmosis membrane
- Remineralization filter: not in all systems
- Post filter
The system is installed under the kitchen sink. Water enters the system first in the sediment filter, where sediment, sand, silt, and particles are removed.
Then the water goes to a carbon filter where contaminants such as chlorine taste and odor are removed.
Both sediment and carbon filters are prefilters and help to remove contaminants that can damage the membrane.
After the above stage, the water goes through the reverse osmosis membrane. The membrane is the heart of the reverse osmosis system. It requires higher incoming water pressure for water to pass through the layers of the tiny membrane. The tiny membrane only allows pure water molecules to pass.
The reverse osmosis membrane removes contaminants such as lead, fluoride, pesticides, mercury, arsenic, hard water minerals, nitrate, and total dissolved solids. At this stage, contaminants larger than 0.0001 microns are removed.
The water goes to the storage tank. After the storage tank, there is one last filter installed called the post-filter, also known as a polish filter. This filter helps remove any taste and odor the water might have picked up from the storage tank.
The filter is installed after the storage tank and is in the final stage. The water leaving the storage tank passes through a polish filter on its way to the faucet/mineralization stage (if the system has one).
Some systems have a remineralization stage. Since the reverse osmosis membrane strips off important minerals that are beneficial to our health, the water becomes slightly acidic; some say it loses taste. You need a stage to add the minerals back, and that’s where the remineralization stage comes in. This stage adds back beneficial minerals (such as calcium and magnesium) that were removed by the membrane.
Some systems have a UV filter. The filter helps keep bacteria out of the water. If you are using well water or groundwater, you need a UV filter.

Home master reverse osmosis system
Replacement filter
7-stages of purification remove 99% of the contaminants such as chlorine, lead, and chloramines.
Except for filtration, the system has patented full-contact technology that adds calcium and magnesium minerals twice during the water purification process for greater taste.
The home master system is designed to solve the problem that the traditional system was not able to. It uses powerful catalytic carbon filtration to treat stubborn chemical disinfectants like chloramines, but the traditional system uses an ordinary carbon filter.
The system comes with a non-electric permeate pump, which improves system efficiency and allows for a faster flow rate. The pump reduces water waste by up to 80% and increases water production by 50%.
The product uses a modular all-in-one filter design where the entire filter is disposed of, unlike the old system which uses a canister filter design where only the filter is changed. This causes sediment, microorganisms, and biofilm to accumulate in the canisters, causing the canisters to weaken and begin to leak, ultimately failing.
The filters are changed annually and are easy to change with just a push-in fitting. You don’t require wrenches to change.
You don’t need a plumber to install the package that comes with the installation instructions. Also, an installation video and live support are available.
It has a five-year limited warranty and includes a storage tank, a 3/8-inch feed water adapter with a shut-off valve, a RO faucet, an RO adapter, a drain saddle, fully assembled purification unit with RO membranes and filters.
Additional features Standard Brushed Nickel RO Faucet, Fridge Connection Kit, and Dow Filmtec High Hardness RO membrane.
The system has a capacity of 75 GPD, a 3.2-gallon storage tank, and a product dimension of 16 x 20 x 12 inches.

This reverse osmosis system is mounted under the sink, which is best for removing contaminants such as chlorine, asbestos, fluoride, arsenic, viruses, calcium, sodium, bacteria, giardia, hormones, and lead.
The iSpring RCC7AK adds a special alkaline re-mineralization filter to remineralize the water. After the reverse osmosis process and before the faucet, water passes through the alkaline re-mineralization filter. This filter is made up of two parts: half red mineral stone and half calcite.
The half-red mineral stone adds back minerals that were removed during the purification process. Such minerals include ionized calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium.
The half calcite neutralizes PH.
For quality guarantee, the system filters water into 6 stages, has the WQA gold seal, a 1-year warranty, and lifetime technical support.
All filters, tanks, tubing, and other water-contacting parts are manufactured to strictly comply with FDA and SDF/ANSI standards for safety and water quality.
The system has a size of 18 x 14.5 x 5.25 inches and the holding tank measures 16 x 11 inches, which makes both the tank and the body fit nicely into the under-sink cabinet.
In the box there is an RO machine, transparent pre-filter housings, filter packs including an alkaline PH filter, house wrenches, 4-color tubing, feed water adapters, 3.2-gallon pressurized tank, drain saddle, spare fittings, O-ring, and a lead-free solid brass body faucet with a brushed nickel finish which is mounted on the counter as the main output for the RO water.
The long-lasting multi-layer membrane filters 75 GPD and has a 2.5-gallon holding capacity.
Written installation procedures, video, and technical support make the installation process easier. For leak-free installation, simply push tubing 1/2 inch deep into quick-fitting connectors and lock—no threading pipes needed.

- Lead
- Chlorine
- Fluoride
- Pesticides
- Mercury
- Arsenic
- Hard water minerals
- Radon
- Benzene
- Nitrate
- TDS-total dissolved solids
Reverse osmosis maintenance
The reverse osmosis system is easy to maintain. You are only required to change the filter.
Change of filter depends on contaminants in your water and usage.
What to check when buying a reverse osmosis system
- Storage tank size
Since the reverse osmosis system goes through various stages to provide purified water, the process takes a lot of time.
You need a storage tank to store filtered water so you do not miss the water when it is on demand. The tank is available in different sizes and you need to choose the system that will accommodate your needs.
That tank is available in different capacities, starting at 50 gallons.
- Amount of water wasted
When water passes through the membrane, only pure water molecules pass through. Water with contaminants does not pass through the membrane, so it is left behind and flushed out of the drain.
You should know the ratio/percentage of the amount of water wasted and how much water is being filtered. Some systems waste a lot of water, others less.
Generally, most systems work on a 3:1 ratio, meaning 3 gallons of water are wasted down the drain and 1 is filtered water.
Most modern systems have improved their units to reduce water wastage, and others have improved the water pressure to reduce wastage. The higher the income water pressure, the less water wastage. You can increase pressure by installing the pump.
Choose the system that has lower water waste to filtered water ratio.
- Incoming water pressure
The reverse osmosis system requires a higher incoming water pressure for water to pass through the layers of the tiny membrane.
Each system requires different levels of pressure. Some require 40 psi and others, 60 psi. The majority of them require a pressure of 60 psi for optimal function.
If your incoming water pressure is below the recommended by the manufacturer, you will need to look at reverse osmosis systems that include a booster pump or purchase a booster pump to increase water pressure.
- Water flow rate
The reverse osmosis system goes through various filtration stages. The process can result in a low flow rate.
- Gallons per day (GPD)
A gallon per day is the amount of water the system will treat in a day.
When selecting an RO system, one thing you should consider most is how many gallons per day the system provides.
To know the right number of gallons you need, you should consider how many gallons a person consumes every day.
On average, a person consumes 75 gallons per day, so if you are four people, you need a system that provides 300 gallons per day (75×4=300GPD).
- Contaminants in water
Every water source has different contaminants. Before buying the RO system, you should know the contaminants present in your water source.
The system varies with the type of contaminants it removes.
To know what contaminants you can test at home using a water test kit or TDS meter.
- Filtration stage
The best reverse osmosis systems filter water in different stages to remove most contaminants in the water.
Choose a system that has different stages for optimal results.
- Replacement filter
A reverse osmosis system involves different filters, such as sediment filters, carbon filters, and membranes.
For optimal results, the filter needs to be replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.
Generally, sediment and carbon filters are changed once a year. The membrane after two years
Choose the system that makes it easier to replace the filter and the cartridge is easily available.
To select the replacement filter for your system, see our posts about the reverse osmosis replacement filter and under sink replacement filter.
- Certification
To guarantee the system provides quality water, it requires testing and certification by independent bodies.
The independent bodies include NSF and the water quality association, WQA.
- Installation space
Under-sink reverse osmosis systems are installed under the kitchen sink. Make sure there is enough space to fit the unit.
- Water temperature
The change in water temperature affects the flow rate. If the temperature is high, the water has a lower viscosity and a higher diffusion rate, making it easier for the water to permeate the RO membrane and, therefore, increase the flow rate. If the temperature is low, it will result in a decrease in the flow rate.
After purchasing your RO system, make sure you find a TDS meter /water test strip. Both the test strip and the TDS meter will help test filtered water from your RO system to confirm whether the system is working well.
Under sink reverse osmosis system installation
is reverse osmosis water alkaline?
Reverse osmosis water is not alkaline or acidic. Reverse osmosis is a water purification system that removes 99% of contaminants in water. The process leaves you with pure water that has a neutral PH level of 7.
Is reverse osmosis water bad for you
There is this myth that the process of reverse osmosis removes all healthy minerals, but that is not the truth. It removes harmful chemicals and contaminants like fluoride and chloride.
